Better Internet for Kids

The Youth Media Protection Index ("Jugendmedienschutzindex") examines how the protection of children and young people from negative online experiences is reflected in the concerns, attitudes, skills and actions of parents as well as adolescents. The report analyses young people's concerns and attitudes towards the digital environment, including negative experiences encountered, parental concerns, and contact and content-related issues.

This short report aims to inform policy responses related to children and young people in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Participants received an online survey with a questionnaire focused on their first experience with the lockdown (March 2020) and their perspectives during the time the survey was applied (second semester of 2020, when national restrictions were being eased).

The Youth Internet Monitor is an initiative of Saferinternet.at and presents current data on social media usage by young people in Austria. It provides data on which social networks are currently popular with young users in Austria, and includes data on trends and gender differences. According to the 2024 edition, the six social networks most used by young people in Austria are, respectively: WhatsApp, Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat, and Pinterest.

The report presents the key results of the 2019 ESPAD survey conducted in 35 countries and presents selected indicators for substance use and other risk behaviours in the participating countries. The survey contains specific questions regarding social media and gaming. In 2019, within the last 7 days, students had used social media for 2-3 hours on a typical school day and for 6 or more hours on a typical non-school day.

The Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (‎HBSC)‎ study is a large school-based survey carried out every four years in collaboration with the WHO Regional Office for Europe. This report, Volume 2 in the series, focuses on adolescent peer violence and bullying, using the unique HBSC evidence on adolescents aged 11, 13 and 15 years across 44 countries and regions in Europe, central Asia and Canada.

This report published by Embætti landlæknis (Directorate of Health) explores the effects of pornography access and consumption by children and young people in Iceland. The impact on their health and well-being is assessed to provide recommendations to teachers, educators, parents, and children related to measures to protect youth from sexual and gender-based violence. The research demonstrates that access to pornographic material is facilitated in the digital environment, finding that large platforms with pornographic material have high levels of access.

Against the backdrop of ongoing EU policy work to safeguard and promote children’s rights in the digital world, the #DigitalDecade4YOUth consultation presents outcomes from comprehensive consultations with children, young people, parents, and educators from EU countries and beyond. The report provides insights from more than 750 children and young people, while the Better Internet for Kids MOOC for teachers reached more than 300 teachers and educators. In addition, EU citizens (including parents) responded to an online survey.

This short report forms part of a contribution to the Parliamentary Commission for Childhood and Adolescence. It draws on findings from the Bullying in Italy: Offensive and violent behaviour among very young people/Il bullismo in Italia: Comportamenti offensivi e violenti tra i giovanissimi (2015). This included data from the  ""Aspects of daily life"" national survey, focusing specifically on experiences of bullying among a sample of young people.

The BEE SECURE Radar 2024 report presents survey results on how children and young people use the Internet and digital media. Drawing on the perspectives of parents, educators, and young people themselves, the report also includes feedback from training courses, interviews with young people, data from the BEE SECURE Helpline, and reports of illegal content collected by the BEE SECURE Stopline. The report assesses good practices and measures to ensure child and youth participation, awareness-raising, and prevention of potential harm or risks.

This report presents findings from a qualitative survey based on focus groups with young people and parents about their experiences of harmful online content. This study, conducted by the Norwegian Media Authority (Medietilsynet), was carried out in Oslo in November 2023. Eleven 13–15-year-olds and their parents were interviewed in two separate focus groups.
