The KIM-Studie 2024 examines the media environment and consumption habits of primary and lower-secondary school children aged 6 to 13 in Germany. The findings highlight a more intensive shift toward digital platforms at younger ages, with over half of active online children accessing the internet daily and 46% owning a smartphone. Streaming services, led by Netflix, have surpassed traditional television as children’s preferred video sources for the first time. The study identifies significant challenges regarding underage social media usage, evolving parental guidance strategies, and school smartphone policies.
Methodology
The report draws on a nationally representative sample of 1,225 children aged 6 to 13 along with their primary caregivers across Germany. Fieldwork was conducted between September 18 and November 7, 2024. Child interviews were conducted in-person via Computer-Assisted Personal Interviewing (CAPI) in households. Primary caregivers simultaneously completed a self-administered questionnaire (Paper & Pencil) tracking family media infrastructure, parental mediation, and oversight.
