Safer Internet Forum (SIF) is a key annual international conference in Europe where policymakers, researchers, law enforcement bodies, youth, parents and caregivers, teachers, NGOs, industry representatives, experts and other relevant actors come together to discuss the latest trends, opportunities, risks and solutions related to child online safety and making the internet a better place.

This year’s edition will take place with a theme of 'Where’s the harm? Protecting children and young people against inappropriate content and bullying online'.

The event is being organised in a youth-led manner, with young people playing an active role in the planning, preparation and delivery of the Forum.

UNESCO Member States declared the first Thursday of November, the International day against violence and bullying at school, including cyberbullying, recognising that school-related violence in all its forms is an infringement of children and adolescents’ rights to education and their health and well-being. It calls upon Member States, UN partners, other relevant international and regional organisations, as well as civil society, including non-governmental organizations, individuals and other stakeholders to help promote, celebrate and facilitate the international day.

The 16th November marks the United Nations International Day for Tolerance. This observance has been celebrated every year since 1995, when the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) adopted its Declaration of Principles on Tolerance.

On the International Day of Tolerance, we recognise the mounting threat posed by those who strive to divide, and let us pledge to forge a path defined by dialogue, social cohesion and mutual understanding. It is an opportunity to reaffirm the United Nations' (UN) commitment to strengthening tolerance by fostering mutual understanding among cultures and peoples, which is "more important than ever in this era of rising and violent extremism and widening conflicts that are characterised by a fundamental disregard for human life". Sexual exploitation and sexual abuse of children can happen online, on a phone, on the streets or through a webcam, at home or at school. It can be inflicted by someone in the child’s circle of trust or even a complete stranger and can cause lifelong damage to the child’s physical and mental health.

To prevent these crimes, prosecute the perpetrators and protect the victims, society as a whole needs to make sure it does not shy away from the problem, but brings it to light and discusses ways and takes practical steps to solve it. In this context, the Council of Europe’s Committee of Ministers adopted a pioneering Convention and launched a campaign to stop sexual violence against children. In 2015, it decided to go one step further by setting up the first European Day for the Protection of Children Against Sexual Exploitation and Sexual Abuse, also known as End Child Sex Abuse Day.

The European Day follows the important work and impact resulting from the Council of Europe ONE in FIVE Campaign to stop sexual violence against children. Its annual objectives are to raise public awareness, open discussion, and ratify and implement the Lanzarote Convention.

The United Nations World Children's Day celebrates the rights of children worldwide to survive and thrive, to be educated, to be free from violence and abuse, to participate and to be heard. World's Children's Day was first established in 1954 as Universal Children's Day to encourage international togetherness, raise awareness among children worldwide, and improve children's welfare.

Better Internet for Kids is dedicated to promoting a digital environment that aligns with the principles of World Children’s Day. In an era where children are increasingly immersed in the online world, our commitment is to ensure their safety, empowerment and respect in the digital world. The United Nations Human Rights Day is observed every year on 10 December. It commemorates the day on which, in 1948, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In 1950, the Assembly passed resolution 423 (V), inviting all States and interested organisations to observe 10 December of each year as Human Rights Day.

Here on the Better Internet for Kids (BIK) platform, we’ll be focusing on the key rights of children and young people, especially as they relate to them being online. Come back nearer the time to read more.

On 26 April 2006 the Council of Europe decided to launch a Data Protection Day to be celebrated each year on 28 January, the date on which the Council of Europe’s data protection convention, known as “Convention 108”, was opened for signature. Data Protection Day is now celebrated globally and is called Privacy Day outside Europe.

On this date, governments, parliaments, national data protection bodies and other actors carry out activities to raise awareness about the rights to personal data protection and privacy. These may include campaigns targeting the general public, educational projects for teachers and students, open doors at data protection agencies and conferences.
