Better Internet for Kids

In societies with aging populations, it becomes important celebrate the increasing number of elderly individuals who possess a diverse range of functional capacities.

It is a day to celebrate how teachers are transforming education but also to reflect on the support they need to fully deploy their talent and vocation, and to rethink the way ahead for the profession globally.  

EU Code Week breaks down barriers to digital skills, making programming more accessible, visible, and inclusive. From classrooms to community spaces, it connects educators, students and tech enthusiasts, bringing ideas to life through digital innovation, and fostering collaboration across Europe.

What began in 2013 as a small, grassroots initiative has grown into a year-round movement reaching millions. EU Code Week is now a continuous initiative, with thousands of activities taking place throughout the year in Europe and beyond. The two-week event each October is the culmination of these efforts — a celebration of a community-driven push to make coding, digital creativity and STEM education accessible to all.

With tens of thousands of activities and an ever-growing network of teachers, students and partners, Code Week continues to inspire innovation and equip the next generation with the skills to shape the future.

The purpose of the day is to draw attention to a given set of cultural and legal issues surrounding youth. The first IYD was observed on 12 August 2000.
 

Harmonised national laws and international cooperation are essential to improve prevention, protect victims and prosecute perpetrators. The European Day helps to raise awareness to that end.

Better Internet for Kids is dedicated to promoting a digital environment that aligns with the principles of World Children’s Day. In an era where children are increasingly immersed in the online world, our commitment is to ensure their safety, empowerment and respect in the digital world. 

We invite you to save the date for Safer Internet Forum (SIF) 2026, which will take place in a hybrid format in Brussels and online on Thursday, 3 December 2026.

Further information on the theme will be shared soon, and registration is expected to open in early September. As is customary, in-person attendance will be by invitation only, while anyone is welcome to join online.

It commemorates the anniversary of one of the world's most groundbreaking global pledges: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This landmark document enshrines the inalienable rights that everyone is entitled to as a human being - regardless of race, colour, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.

Over the years, Safer Internet Day (SID) has become a landmark event in the online safety calendar. Starting as an initiative of the EU SafeBorders project in 2004 and taken up by the Insafe network as one of its earliest actions in 2005, Safer Internet Day has grown beyond its traditional geographic zone and is now celebrated in more than 180 countries and territories worldwide.

From cyberbullying to social networking to digital identity, each year Safer Internet Day aims to raise awareness of emerging online issues and current concerns.

Safer Internet Day 2027 will be marked throughout the whole month of February. The global day of focus will take place on Tuesday, 9 February 2027.
