deSHAME II Research summary leaflet

The Safer Internet Centre in Croatia, in the framework of the project "Safer Internet Centre Croatia: making the internet a good and safe place“, conducted the first systematic, international comparative study aimed at deepening the understanding of internet use, online behaviours of parents, and parental mediation of children’s online behaviours. The research was conducted with the support of the UK-based organisation Childnet International.

Safer Internet Centres celebrate SID 2025: Norway

In 2025, we aim to stand with young people in addressing harmful online content. Research from Handlingsplanen for en trygg digital oppvekst (action plan for safe online upbringing), independent studies, and surveys by the Norwegian Media Authority show that young people rarely report unpleasant or illegal experiences online. The action plan also highlights that many young people have limited knowledge about their own and their peers' rights in digital spaces.

Safer Internet Centres celebrate SID 2025: The Netherlands

First, Offlimits organised an event as the official Kick Off of Safer Internet Day with our Youth Panel. On the 4 February, they organised a network event for stakeholders on the topic of age assurance. We invited various speakers. Simone van der Hof, a professor at Leiden University and an expert on the topic of age assurance, opened the event with a session on what age assurance possibilities exist and what it should look like when considering children’s rights.

Safer Internet Centres celebrate SID 2025: Malta

Safer Internet Day 2025 has been an incredible success, marking a month filled with impactful activities, meaningful discussions, and significant milestones for our team at Malta’s Safer Internet Centre. As we reflect on February’s achievements, we are proud of the awareness raised, the communities engaged, and the progress made in fostering a safer digital world for children and young people.

Safer Internet Centres celebrate SID 2025: Latvia

An educational conference called “Experiencing artificial intelligence” took place on 11 February at Splendid Palace Cinema.

In recognition of Safer Internet Day, we provided educators with the opportunity to hear from leading experts, thought leaders, and practitioners. Their insights helped explore whether artificial intelligence (AI) truly possesses intelligence and examined AI’s role in society and education.

Programme highlights:

Safer Internet Centres celebrate SID 2025: Ireland

This year’s theme is Prepare / protect / thrive: Navigating algorithms and influencers, and it invites parents, schools, educators, young people, and all stakeholders to consider how algorithms and influencers shape young people’s lives. In a world of endless online information, Safer Internet Day 2025 explores ways to empower children to thrive, equipped with skills to navigate both the opportunities and challenges of these powerful digital influences.

Safer Internet Centres celebrate SID 2025: Hungary

For the 22nd time, Safer Internet Day (SID) was celebrated worldwide on 11 February. The global day aims to raise awareness about safer and more responsible internet use among children and young people. The motto of the event is "Together for a better internet!". In connection with the event, the Hungarian Safer Internet Centre, run by the International Children's Safety Service (ICSS), organised a special internet safety programme in Budapest, at the Hungarian Telekom Headquarters.

Call for youth participation: EU youth consultation on the Draft Guidelines for Article 28 of the DSA

[NEW, FOR INFORMATION AND ACTION]

EUN is currently in the process of supporting the European Commission in gathering feedback from children and young people on the Draft Guidelines for Article 28 of the DSA. While some SICs have already expressed an interest in conducting consultations with children and young people at the national level, EUN will complement the consultation series with a pan-European youth consultation. Hence, we are looking for 15 young people between the ages of 14 and 18 (ideally, with a preference for 16 to 18 years, given the nature of the consultation exercise). The consultation will take place online on Monday, 14 April 2025, from 18:00-19:30 CEST

To ensure a diverse group in terms of gender, age and geography, we invite each SIC to put forward a maximum of two nominees per country. Once the call for participation has been closed, we will inform SICs of the final group composition and selected youth.  Please note, as this consultation concerns aspects related to the DSA, the nominated youth should be from EU Member States only

If you are interested, please email the details of your proposed youth candidates to Chiara and Sabrina by the close of business on Monday, 31 March 2025.

Capacity building

Insafe-INHOPE joint training meeting - March 2025

[THIS WEEK]

We are looking forward to seeing many of you at the joint training meeting in Amsterdam this week. Everyone who has registered now should have received a copy of the meeting booklet as well as details of the open space sessions. Please contact Karl if you haven’t received these – but you can also find them in the BIK community (login first).

Cyberbullying session at the joint training meeting
As you know, there will be a session during the training meeting which will focus on cyberbullying and, in particular, provide an opportunity for discussion to inform the upcoming EC action plan against cyberbullying. Before attending this session, SICs are asked to give some consideration to the following questions:

1.    Is there one (or several) definition(s) of cyberbullying that are commonly used in your country? If so, which one(s)?

2.    Can you let us know about the most significant and most recent developments around cyberbullying in your country:

a)    National policies/legislation
b)    Research
c)    Innovative/impactful education and awareness-raising resources
d)    Key organisations/partnerships/initiatives/campaigns
e)    Other developments that you consider critical in this space (e.g., providing support, raising awareness, holding online platforms accountable, etc.)

3.    Considering points 1 and 2, where do you see critical needs/gaps to be addressed (beyond funding) in fighting cyberbullying at national and EU level?

*We have put together a short template to help capture responses and have pre-populated with some of the information that we already have. Templates for each country can be accessed here; please feel free to fill out your country template in preparation for the session. Many thanks to all those who have already accessed these.

Insafe-INHOPE joint training meeting resource competition

[THIS WEEK]

It is almost time for the Insafe-INHOPE joint training meeting resource competition!

Many thanks to all the SICs and hotlines that have submitted an entry for this edition of the competition and for participating in the first vote. We have selected three finalists among the most popular resources. We will hear more from them at the training meeting later this week, in a dedicated session during which a final round of voting will take place on Thursday, 20 March 2025.

We would like to wish all finalists the best of luck for this edition of the resource competition!

If you have any questions, please contact Karl or Annarita.

Safer Internet Centres celebrate SID 2025: Germany

Safer Internet Day (SID) 2025 was celebrated worldwide on 11 February. Together with the partners of the German Safer Internet Centre, klicksafe implemented the motto “No likes for lies! Recognise extremism, populism, and deepfakes online” with a wide range of activities. With our digital school lesson, we were able to educate over 30,000 pupils across Germany about right-wing extremist propaganda and disinformation online. In Berlin, we organised a dialogue panel with pupils, experts, and Federal Minister for Family Affairs Lisa Paus.
