Guidelines for dealing with child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and sexually explicit depictions involving minors

Specialists play a crucial role in supporting adults and children who come into contact with depictions of sexualised violence against children and young people and sexual depictions of minors. The guide provides professionals from psychosocial and educational institutions with helpful information, the legal framework, step-by-step instructions and preventive measures to enable them to act quickly and appropriately.

Factsheet: deepfakes and sexualised violence

Artificial intelligence has become part of our everyday lives. This includes the increasingly authentic-looking deepfakes that are influencing the lives of children and young people. This factsheet provides an overview of the status quo of deepfakes, shows from a child protection perspective the problems that deepfakes can cause with regard to (sexualised) violence, and offers legal classifications as well as tips and support services.

Quiz “Sexting and online harassment”

The quiz “Sexting and online harassment” is aimed at young people and teaches them how to handle intimate content and harassment responsibly. Players learn about the legal framework of sexting, are educated about risks, and receive tips on what to do if a picture falls into the wrong hands. The quiz also uses case studies to show what sexual harassment is and how to protect yourself from it. Among other things, it addresses what you can do if someone asks you uncomfortable questions or requests intimate photos.

Insafe-INHOPE joint training meeting - March 2025

[UPDATED, FOR INFORMATION AND PARTICIPATION]

We are looking forward to seeing many of you at the joint training meeting in Amsterdam next week, which will have around 180 people attending. Everyone who has registered will receive a copy of the meeting booklet later this week. If you have not yet registered but plan to attend, or if you have any questions or need any further information about the meeting, then please contact Karl.

Cyberbullying session at the joint training meeting
You may have seen that we will have a session during the training meeting which will focus on cyberbullying and, in particular, provide an opportunity for discussion to inform the upcoming EC action plan against cyberbullying. Before attending this session, SICs are asked to give some consideration to the following questions.

1.    Is there one (or several) definition(s) of cyberbullying that are commonly used in your country? If so, which one(s)?

2.    Can you let us know about the most significant and most recent developments around cyberbullying in your country:

a)    National policies/legislation
b)    Research
c)    Innovative/impactful education and awareness-raising resources
d)    Key organisations/partnerships/initiatives/campaigns
e)    Other developments that you consider critical in this space (e.g., providing support, raising awareness, holding online platforms accountable, etc.)

3.    Considering points 1 and 2, where do you see critical needs/gaps to be addressed (beyond funding) in fighting cyberbullying at national and EU level?

*We have put together a short template to help capture responses, which we will pre-populate with some of the information that we already have. Templates for each country can be accessed here; please feel free to fill out your country template in preparation for the session.

Good practice guide on working with younger children

[FINAL REMINDER, FOR INFORMATION AND ACTION]

As you may know, we are in the process of writing a good practice guide on working with very young children. We need to hear from you about any resources that you have that target this particular age group (children from 0-8), and also parents/caregivers and educators who work with them. Please share links to any resources or materials with Karl so that they can be included in the good practice guide by the close of business this Friday, 14 March 2025. Additionally, if anyone would be willing to provide feedback on the draft report, this would be very welcome too – again, please get in touch withKarl.

Online meeting for helplines with Throughline

[REMINDER, FOR INFORMATION AND PARTICIPATION]

There will be an online meeting for helplines on Thursday, 3 April 2025 at 09:00 CEST. The meeting will hear from Elliot Taylor, the CEO of Throughline. Throughline is used by many social media platforms (e.g., Discord) and other platforms and apps, and provides a direct link to a helpline or support service which is local to a user who needs help. Some Insafe helplines are already included in their directory, but others are not, and we thought it would be useful to provide an opportunity for helplines to hear more about the service and how it works so that they could potentially be included. You can use this link to join the meeting. Please contact Karl if you need further information or if you have any questions.

Online meeting with Meta

The month of Safer Internet Day action has now come to an end; thank you for all your support.

SID 2025 reporting
This is a kind reminder that your SIC’s SID reporting template (including a blog article on SID successes) is due for submission by COB tomorrow, Tuesday, 11 March 2025, via the BIK community assessment tools (login first). This is required for campaign reporting to the EC, and it is important that your SIC's data is included.

Please note - there is no offline version of the reporting form this year (following feedback, we will ensure this is enabled for the next edition of SID). In the meantime, these screenshots provide an overview of what is required (in the BIK community; login first). Please note, also, that you can save the online form as a draft as many times as you need to before finally submitting it.

Call for content for the next edition of the BIK bulletin

[REMINDER, FOR INFORMATION AND ACTION]

The next edition of the BIK bulletin will be published at the end of March 2025, with news on the recently published BIK+ strategy evaluation and a round-up of Safer Internet Day actions. As always, we also invite Safer Internet Centres (and their partners) to contribute with general articles on news, resources or events. The content deadline is COB on Monday, 24 March 2025. All contributions or queries should be addressed to content@betterinternetforkids.eu.

As a reminder, we generally suggest that articles should be 300 - 600 words in length (but longer focus pieces are fine too), along with copyright-cleared images/photographs/logos if appropriate. The BIK team reserves the right to edit contributions for house style etc., but we try to keep this to a minimum.

Technical child protection on the internet

Although promoting media literacy among young users is the top priority, the use of technical measures on the digital devices of younger children can be helpful. The range of technical child protection measures is vast, and they typically combine various functions to keep inappropriate content away from minors. This usually involves setting usage times, filtering content, and blocking certain applications.
