Safer Internet Centres celebrate SID 2025: Malta

Apart from Safer Internet Day activities in Malta in 2025, February also marked the month that Malta received Trusted Flagger status! Read more about SID 2025.

Safer Internet Day 2025 has been an incredible success, marking a month filled with impactful activities, meaningful discussions, and significant milestones for our team at Malta’s Safer Internet Centre. As we reflect on February’s achievements, we are proud of the awareness raised, the communities engaged, and the progress made in fostering a safer digital world for children and young people.

Safer Internet Day info day in Valletta

One of the highlights of this year’s Safer Internet Day celebrations was our Info Day in Valletta, which we carried out as an outreach exercise. We stood by the Parliament in the main square, handing out information and speaking with people and children who approached us about internet safety risks and ways to protect themselves. The event provided an open platform to share insights, address concerns, and promote digital wellbeing.

Empowering schools, students, and parents

Throughout the month, we carried out numerous sessions in schools, reaching both children and parents with critical information on online safety. These sessions covered topics such as cyberbullying, sexting, grooming, AI-generated content, and the importance of digital resilience. By fostering open discussions, we helped young people understand the risks they face online while equipping parents with strategies to guide their children in safe and responsible internet use.

Reaching the public through media and digital outreach

To further amplify our message, we actively engaged with the public through radio and television appearances, spreading awareness on national platforms. Our social media campaign on Facebook, complemented by articles and resources shared in the lead-up to Safer Internet Day, played a crucial role in informing and educating our community. These efforts ensured that online safety remained at the forefront of public discourse, reaching thousands across different media channels.

A milestone achievement: Trusted Flagger status

This February also marked a significant achievement for our Safer Internet Centre—we were officially awarded Trusted Flagger status under the new Digital Services Act by the Digital Services Coordinator - Malta Communications Authority. This recognition underscores our commitment to combating illegal online content and protecting users from harm. As a Trusted Flagger, we are now in an even stronger position to report and remove harmful and illegal content more efficiently, reinforcing our role as a key player in safeguarding the digital landscape.

A proactive approach: Our new video on reporting illegal content

In alignment with our commitment to proactive digital safety measures, we also created a video resource for schools, encouraging a more hands-on approach to reporting illegal content. This video was developed with the valuable contributions of our youth ambassadors, who played a crucial role in shaping its content. Additionally, three of our partners—the Office for the Commissioner for Children, the Malta Police Force - Cybercrime Unit, and the Foundation for Social Welfare Services - Agenzija Appoġġ—came together to deliver a unified message to all children in schools. The video not only educates young people and educators on the importance of reporting harmful content but also reinforces our role as a trusted entity dedicated to online safety. By equipping schools with this resource, we continue to emphasise proactive protection and early intervention in tackling online risks.

Looking ahead

As we close this successful Safer Internet Day campaign, we remain committed to driving ongoing conversations, education, and action around online safety. This month has showcased the power of collaboration, education, and awareness in creating a more secure and empowering digital environment for all.

We extend our deepest gratitude to everyone who participated, supported, and engaged with us throughout this journey. Together, we are making the internet a safer place, one step at a time.
