This article is part of the campaign DSA for YOUth - Protecting minors by design, focusing on the DSA guidelines for the protection of minors under the DSA, including the age verification (AV) and age-appropriate (AA) measures, and translating these rules into clear, practical, and jargon-free resources. In this insight series, we explore how different Safer Internet Centres are working at the national level to raise awareness about the DSA and how it impacts the everyday lives of young people, their parents or caregivers, and teachers and educators.

DSA for YOUth SIC insights from North Macedonia

North Macedonian Youth Ambassador, Damjan, presents a national survey activity conducted as part of the country’s Safer Internet Centre work, under the banner of MKSafeNet, an initiative aimed at promoting digital safety among young people. I how young people use popular digital platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and Google, the n this short video, Damjan introduces the survey, explaining how it explores the ways young people use popular digital platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, and Google, what online risks they encounter, and how aware they are of their privacy and digital rights under the Digital Services Act (DSA).

The video opens with a brief introduction to MKSafeNet, highlighting its role within the Ministry of Digital Transformation in Skopje. Damjan shares: “Hi! My name is Damjan, and I’m the youth representative of MKSafeNet. We’re working on something exciting – a national survey focused on how young people like us use online platforms, what risks we face, and how much we know about our privacy and digital rights.”

The survey is designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of young people’s digital experiences.

The following scenes explore why the survey is important, especially in light of the DSA. Damjan explains: “With the Digital Services Act now in place across the EU, we think it's important to understand how safe we really feel online – especially on platforms like TikTok, Instagram, YouTube, or Snapchat.” Visuals include dynamic shots of mobile devices, app icons, and captions highlighting key concepts like “Privacy,” “Safety,” “DSA,” and “Youth Voice.”

The survey asks questions such as which platforms young people use, whether they have encountered harmful content, how they protect their privacy, and whether they have heard of the DSA. The project activity is conducted by youth for youth, with active participation from young people to ensure the initiative reflects their perspectives.

The video concludes by emphasising the collaborative nature of the project: “This project is made with young people, for young people – and we’ll use the results to help make the internet a safer place for everyone. We’ll be sharing our findings soon – stay tuned!”

Through this initiative, MKSafeNet encourages youth engagement, raises awareness of online safety, and will ultimately use the survey results to promote a safer internet environment for all.
