About the organisation

MKSafeNet is the national Safer Internet Centre (SIC) of North Macedonia, launched in 2024 under the Ministry of Digital Transformation and co-funded by the European Union through the Digital Europe Programme (HaDEA).

The centre is being established because North Macedonia previously lacked a national Safer Internet Centre. Its goal is to build the core national infrastructure for online safety and connect the country to the wider European Safer Internet Centres network. The project brings together government, education institutions, child-protection organisations and civil society partners to deliver a safer digital environment for children and young people. Ministry of Digital Transformation MKSafeNet delivers its work through several core services: an awareness centre that develops age-appropriate resources, school workshops and public campaigns on privacy, respectful behaviour online and recognising online risks; a helpline that will provide confidential guidance for children, parents, carers and teachers, including first response in cases such as cyberbullying or other online harm; and preparatory work for a national hotline mechanism to report illegal online material, including child sexual abuse material (CSAM), in cooperation with the competent authorities.

The project is also creating a youth panel so that young people can help shape messages and priorities, and an Advisory Board of key national stakeholders. The long-term vision is for MKSafeNet to continue as a permanent public service within the Ministry of Digital Transformation even after the EU-funded project formally ends.

Awareness centre

The MKSafeNet Awareness Centre is currently being established under the Ministry of Digital Transformation as part of the national Safer Internet Centre for North Macedonia. The Awareness Centre will provide information materials, school sessions, and public campaigns on safer internet use, online behaviour, privacy, and cyberbullying for children, parents, educators, and the wider public. At this stage, the service is not yet fully public-facing.

Until the Awareness Centre is formally launched, general enquiries about awareness activities can be sent to mksafenet@mdt.gov.mk.

Updates on availability, opening hours and contact channels will be published on https://mksafenet.mk/ and on MKSafeNet's social media channels.

Youth participation

MKSafeNet is in the process of preparing a national youth panel as part of the Safer Internet Centre in North Macedonia. The aim of this youth panel is to ensure that children and young people are heard in discussions about online safety, including issues such as cyberbullying, privacy, exposure to harmful content, and unsafe contact online.

The Youth Panel will provide a structured way for young people to express their views and to highlight the types of support they feel are most needed. The planned forms of involvement for young people include:

  • Sharing opinions and experiences through consultations and discussions with the Ministry of Digital Transformation;
  • Contributing ideas for awareness messages and educational materials on safe and responsible internet use;
  • Taking part in selected public activities related to safer internet use (for example, awareness campaigns and school-focused initiatives).

At this stage, the Youth Panel is still in the setup phase, and formal membership is not yet open. Schools, youth groups, parents or young people who wish to express an interest in future participation may contact MKSafeNet at mksafenet@mdt.gov.mk.

Updates on the youth panel, including how to apply and any eligibility criteria, will be published on https://mksafenet.mk/ and via MKSafeNet's social media channels once the structure is formally launched.
