Essay collection: Children's rights in the digital world

To gain more insight into the issues at play at the intersection of children’s rights and digitalization, UNICEF the Netherlands has partnered with Leiden University and Stichting Kennisnet to publish a collection of essays. In these essays, experts reflect on a variety of issues involving children’s rights in the digital world.

Online age verification: Balancing the protection of minors with privacy

This short research report and policy briefing presents CNIL's analysis of the main types of age verification systems in order to clarify its position on age control on the internet, and in particular pornographic sites for which such control is mandatory. It specifies how these publishers could fulfill their legal obligations. However, the CNIL notes that these current systems are circumventable and intrusive and calls for the implementation of models that are more respectful of privacy.

Are digital natives digitally literate? - Insights from a national representative survey

This study is the third short report to present preliminary results of the survey Online Conduct of Children in Bulgaria, published by the Bulgarian Safer Internet Centre. It addresses the notion of digital literacy, focusing on child participation in online activities related to both negative and positive impacts of internet usage, practices, and engagement. The report approaches children’s participation through recommendations and opportunities to support children and young people when using the internet critically.

Parental support for development of children’s digital skills - A national representative survey

This study is the second short report to present preliminary results of the survey Online Conduct of Children in Bulgaria, published by the Bulgarian Safer Internet Centre. Addressing parental support, media education, information literacy, communication, and children empowerment in the digital environment, the study focuses on how parents support children to develop digital media literacy skills.

Online experiences of children in Bulgaria: Risks and safety - A national representative survey

This study is the first short report to present preliminary results of the survey Online Conduct of Children in Bulgaria, published by the Bulgarian Safer Internet Centre. Addressing potential harm and risks in the digital environment, the results reveal a comprehensive approach related to the online conduct of children and young people and the impact of media education. In addition to accessing online experiences and potentially harmful content, social networks and the sharing of information and personal data on this type of platform are also investigated.

More than half of the population aged 16-74 has digital skills at or above basic level - 2023

According to the report, in 2023, 25.9% of people aged 16 to 74 have digital skills at basic level and 30.0% above basic, giving a proportion of 56.0% for all those with skills at basic level or above, 0.7 percentage points (pp) more than in 2021.

In the same year, 85.8% of the resident population aged 16-74 used the internet in the 3 months prior to the interview (1.3 pp more than in the previous year). Virtually all young people aged 16-24 and all students use the internet, and the usage rate is over 98% for those (16-74) who have completed upper secondary or tertiary education.
