This short report presents findings of a survey carried out in November – December 2021 by the Hellenic Safer Internet Center of the ITE under the approval of the Ministry of Education and Religion (No. Prot. 89431/GD4), on a sample of 5000 students aged from 12-18 years old.
According to the study, one in four children has received private photos of others and experienced online harassment, and one in two chat with strangers and make friends online. One in four children has encountered intolerant speech online, and one in ten children has been a victim of online fraud. 6% of young people report that they have been victims of cyberbullying, with girls outnumbering boys, and 13% have witnessed bullying. Of the children who have observed a friend/acquaintance being bullied, the encouraging thing is that the majority did not care but tried to support the victim privately. However, only a small percentage addressed an adult. Despite the fact that children consider the disclosure of personal data and contact with strangers to be the two biggest risks on the Internet, one in two children chats with strangers and makes friends online. One in four children say they have been approached online at some point with malicious intent.
