Are you an expert in online safety ?

In today's digital landscape, it is important for parents to equip themselves with the necessary knowledge and tools to navigate the ever-evolving digital world responsibly. To address this need, we have developed a comprehensive module tailored specifically for parents. Our module is designed to empower parents with a deeper understanding of the digital realm their children inhabit.

Through a combination of engaging video and text materials accessible online, parents can delve into five essential chapters covering the following topics:

  •  Child and adolescent safety on the internet
  • What are the risks faced by children and adolescents on the internet?
  • What are parents' concerns about children and adolescents using the internet?
  • Age restrictions and social media usage
  • Conclusions and recommendations

These resources can be accessed online on our website. Parents can go through the module at their own pace and revisit topics of interest anytime

It is important to recognise the risks associated with inappropriate Internet usage and the long-term effects and repercussions on children's development. The subtle yet pervasive nature of these risks, coupled with societal norms and the silence of stakeholders, demands proactive engagement from parents and caregivers.

Many of the pieces of advice given to parents regarding children and adolescents' use of technology are based on outdated research and studies. For instance, claims that issues like loss of concentration, anxiety, and depression among children are increasing due to excessive screen time led to recommendations for strict control, monitoring, and punishment. The problem arises from attributing complex issues to a single cause, such as screen time, and assuming generalised effects like symptoms resembling ADHD, depression, and anxiety.

The internet has acquired multiple dimensions; its use serves various purposes, and consequently, the effects can arise from multiple factors. Therefore, we should not excessively control children but educate them to make the best decisions to stay safe while navigating the internet.
