Quick support for children and youth
"Some young people find it easier to write about their worries instead of talking about them. That's what online counselling is for!" says one of NgK’s (Nummer gegen Kummer) online counsellors.
The online service was launched in 2003 – making it one of the oldest online counselling services for children and youth in Germany. Since then, around 195,000 counselling sessions have been conducted by the online counselling team. On average, around 1,250 inquiries from children and young people are received every month. The service would not have been possible without the great personal commitment of the many (mostly volunteer) employees, so our special thanks go to them!
Around 60 per cent of young people seeking support are in an acute crisis
Young people can get support at www.nummergegenkummer.de by email and, since 2019, also via chat. Being there for young people seeking help, especially when dealing with difficult and stressful issues, empowering them, informing them, and, if necessary, motivating them to seek further help on their own is an important aim of online counselling.
Writing down their problems is often a relief for those seeking help and a first step towards coping with their situation. In contrast to the child helpline (116 111), more girls (74 per cent) use online counselling. The main age group of those seeking help is between 13 and 18 years old.
Confidential, cost-free and easily accessible
Like all services under the umbrella of Nummer gegen Kummer, online counselling is easily accessible and open to all topics, questions and concerns.
Nowadays, youth contact us primarily about psychological problems, but also their own relationship with their parents, self-confidence and fears are frequent topics.
says Rainer Schütz, CEO of Nummer gegen Kummer e.V.
