Back to school 2025 in Germany: learn how to deal with artificial intelligence and deepfakes

AI applications and deepfakes have become a significant part of our everyday lives. That is why the German Awareness Centre klicksafe aims to empower young people, parents and educational professionals to deal with AI and deepfakes with this year's BackToSchool campaign. The campaign runs throughout September and offers new materials and tips for educational practice. One highlight of the campaign will be the klicksafe school lesson on 1 October, which can be streamed by schools nationwide.

Every year, the EU-funded initiative klicksafe supports teachers, educators, pupils and parents at the start of the school year with new teaching materials and digital offers on current media literacy topics. This year's BackToSchool campaign in Germany focuses on the topic of safe use of AI and deepfakes

Deepfakes are manipulated media content such as images, videos or sound files that are either altered or completely created with the help of AI. The technology has long since become part of our everyday lives, including in the classroom. With this nationwide campaign, klicksafe is raising awareness of the opportunities and risks of this new technology. The aim is to give pupils, parents, guardians and educational professionals guidance and strengthen their digital skills.

The JIM (JIM – Youth, Information, Media) Study 2024 shows that over three fifths of young people between 14 and 19 years already use AI tools themselves, most frequently for school or homework. However, the results of AI are often not or not sufficiently questioned.

Materials and offers from klicksafe

The new klicksafe offers are tailored for pupils from grade 7 onwards, and provide numerous tips and information on the safe use of AI applications and deepfakes. The materials can help to improve pupils' media skills.

Exciting guests and experts will provide young people with professional tips and be available to answer their questions. Registered classes will receive a free work package to implement the school lesson on site. School classes can register for the digital event until 26 September 2025. As of mid-September 2025, more than 30,000 pupils in Germany have already registered.

Teaching material on AI and deepfakes

The handbook "Deep Fake. Deep Impact. How young people can recognise deepfakes and learn to critically question their consequences" provides educational professionals and interested parties with basic factual information and project ideas for educational practice for the target group of pupils. The brochure is complemented by the quiz "Deepfake Detectives".

The supplementary booklet goes into more detail on the ethical commandments and will be published in fall.
