Safer Internet Day 2024 in Latvia

On Safer Internet Day 2024, Latvian pupils from grades 10-12 participated in the nationwide online quiz "Mind Games" on various aspects of internet safety. 317 teams from different Latvian schools and regions took part in the quiz, competing to test their knowledge about digital literacy, cyber security and media literacy jointly exploring more on topics such as privacy risks as well as the importance of respectful online communication and relationships.

The quiz had five rounds, and the winner of the online quiz team, Padvalieši from the East Latvian Secondary School of Technology, was the most erudite, knowledgeable, and fastest in Latvia, winning first place.

Many events took place all across Latvia

In addition to the events of the day, Safer Internet Day was celebrated across Latvia throughout February with various educational activities. Additionally, over 170 regional educational events and activities were organised throughout the month by schools, libraries, youth centres, and kindergartens. All registered events were included in a  Safer Internet Day event map.

In addition, children took part in other educational activities organised by the Latvian Safer Internet Centre. Activities included crossword puzzles about the internet for students of different age groups (grades 1-3, 4-6 and 7-9), aimed at enhancing pupils’ understanding of internet safety and helping them assess their knowledge. Consequently, more than 4,700 correct entries were received.

The Latvian Safer Internet Centre also encouraged secondary school pupils to share their online experiences with primary and elementary school pupils and discuss the importance of respecting and protecting private information together. Two presentations were developed, one focused on Private Information and one on Respect Others! allowing older pupils to cooperate with smaller children and enjoy an interesting learning process.

Additionally, several educational and exploration board games were developed to encourage younger children to engage in SID activities.

Consequently, the children received a diploma for their good work and participation.
