Family Day in a primary school in Portugal

As part of Family Day, an initiative of the José Joaquim Rita Seixas primary school in Portugal, Elsa Caetano, mother and member of the Portuguese National Centre for Cybersecurity Centre, working specifically with the Safer Internet Centre, spoke about her professional role in her child’s kindergarten.

It was a very special experience” she recalls. The aim of the invitation was to raise the children's awareness of how important it is to stay safe when navigating the internet.

"I believe it’s never too early to teach young children how to explore the digital world responsibly and I was genuinely impressed by the interest and enthusiasm they all showed."

The session centred on the resource “ZigZaga na Net: Novas Aventuras”: the book tells the story of Benjamim, a digital leader who encourages his community to be aware of online risks and promotes safe and conscious internet use. In this context, it was particularly interesting to observe the children’s engagement and their thoughtful reactions to the topic.

To make the session even more engaging and accessible, “ZigZaga na Net: Navegar a Cores” was introduced to the class: it is a colouring book with illustrations and simple messages on cyber hygiene. The book helps children understand that cyberspace can be a place of learning and fun, as long as it is used wisely. At the end of the session, the children were invited to colour the book, which proved to be a playful and effective way to address such an important topic.

Finally, the children were offered the resource “Mum, can I use your phone?” to take home and share with their parents. This tool aims to encourage families to have conversations about boundaries, trust and healthy digital habits.
