Creating responsible digital citizens: GNR and Microsoft join forces on Safer Internet Day 2025 in Portugal

Safer Internet Day is celebrated annually on the second Tuesday in February, and this year for the first time with a full month of activities. As a partner of the Safer Internet Centre Consortium in Portugal, Microsoft joined forces with the National Republican Guard (GNR) and local municipalities to promote a safer and more responsible use of online technology. With this year's theme of 'digital citizenship', the mission is to empower every person and organisation in the world to achieve more.

The internet offers immense opportunities, but it also poses significant risks, especially for young and vulnerable users. This initiative serves as an important reminder to raise awareness of online dangers such as cyberbullying, identity theft and online harassment. It also highlights the need for digital literacy and positive online behaviour and advocates for the protection of privacy and personal data.

SID 2025 marks the eleventh year of a successful partnership between GNR and Microsoft in Portugal. Engaging sessions for children and older people were organised, explaining basic concepts such as data protection, digital identity and the possibilities and precautions when using artificial intelligence tools. These sessions are designed to be interactive and educational to ensure that the message of online safety is effectively communicated to participants of all ages.

This year, GNR and Microsoft partnered with local municipalities to expand the reach of Safer Internet Day, with presentations with representatives from both organisations, interactive sessions and opportunities for participants to ask questions and engage with the content. These events brought together children and older people, parents and teachers, and emphasised the importance of responsible online behaviour and the potential of AI tools. The events reached more than 2,000 people last February.

As we move through the complexities of the digital age, the principles of digital citizenship have become even more important. Digital citizenship encompasses the responsible use of technology and the internet, the promotion of ethical behaviour, the protection of personal data and the promotion of a safe and inclusive digital environment.

Safer Internet Day 2025 activities in Portugal were featured on a range of news outlets (RTP, SIC, Correio da manhã 1 and 2). The impressive participation numbers and successful partnerships with Microsoft and the local communities demonstrate the importance of collaborative efforts to promote online safety. As the digital age continues moving forward, the principles of digital citizenship shall remain at the forefront to empower every person and organisation to achieve more.
