Originating as an EU initiative, Safer Internet Day has now expanded into a worldwide movement, now celebrated in over 180 countries and territories. The campaign is organised on behalf of the European Commission by the Insafe network, coordinated by European Schoolnet, and INHOPE, the International Association of Internet Hotlines. Together, they work to enhance digital literacy, online safety, and responsible internet usage
New initiatives and resources
Among this year’s Safer Internet Day activities are:
- Publication of a new report “First evaluation of the European strategy for a better internet for kids (BIK+): A summary of consultations with children, young people, and expert stakeholders”.
- The last week of running of the AdWiseOnline campaign, addressing manipulative marketing practices targeting young consumers and advocating for stronger online protections.
- The opportunity to sign up for the BIK MOOC "Child Online Safety: What Educators Need to Know", a free course for teachers and educators about the opportunities and risks young people face online, including cyberbullying, mental health issues, and addictive design. The course provides strategies for promoting online safety and well-being, while raising awareness of resources for teaching digital safety in schools and non-formal education settings.
