In the Netherlands, various activities were organised to raise awareness about online safety. The slogan, Together for a better internet, encouraged parents, teachers, young people, and many others to think about safer internet use for children. Much attention was paid to this important topic both by the Dutch Safer Internet Centre and other national organisations.
New lesson plan
Under the proposition that anyone can be a 'teacher for a day' and talk to children about safe internet use, Veiliginternetten created a primary lesson plan. This complete lesson includes questions, fun anecdotes, social media advice and assignments, ensuring that children get on board with digital safety. Following much interest, colleagues from the Safer Internet Centre will be visiting schools in the future to deliver the lesson also.
New Offlimits study conducted by the helpline Helpwanted.
This new research focused on examining the motives for the non-consensual sharing of intimate images (NCSII). The insights in this study result in more knowledge of – and possibly the prevention of – sexting abuse and shift the focus of NCSII from the victim to the perpetrator. Non-consensual sharing is where things go wrong, and the perpetrator should be held responsible for this. This important message was addressed to young people, parents and teachers throughout Safer Internet Day.
UNICEF, Kennisnet and the University of Leiden organised a symposium on Safer Internet Day.
Several researchers, policymakers and relevant partners from the safer internet and children’s rights field came together to present a collection of essays. Eight essays have been written about Children's Rights in the Digital World. These essays call for action, where, according to UNICEF, the responsibility lies with government, education, parents and businesses to work together with children to create an accessible, safe and just digital world.
