It has become a tradition for “Langas į ateitį”, together with the Safer Internet Centre partners, to visit children's camps every summer and to talk to the campers about the opportunities and dangers of the internet.
This summer, together with partners - the Lithuanian Non-Formal Education Agency and the Child Line - the Lithuanian SIC visited four Lithuanian cities - Druskininkai, Varniai (Telšiai district), Vilnius and Alytus. In total, we met with almost 200 campers, from pre-schoolers to fourth graders. The camps topics varied from the best emotions of summer to art and smart technology. Even if it's the holiday season, nobody shouldn't forget about staying safe online!
We talked to children about safe passwords. Together, we remembered to use unique passwords for different accounts. Using the same password increases the risk that if hackers find out the password of one account, it could be used to access other accounts, such as email or social networks. It's also important to store the passwords correctly - if you write them down, don't put the accout name next to the password, or do not write down the password in full. Another topic of high interest to young people is the proper protection of photos on the internet. We talked to children at the camps about the fact that our image is also personal data that needs to be protected, and that information published on the internet becomes public and accessible to everyone. Summer is also a great time to take a break from the internet and spend more time outdoors! We played with the kids about fun summer activities without smart devices. Children love cycling and scooting, swimming and fishing, reading books and spending time with friends.
