Goodbye, summer! A unique event for Ukrainian children in Lithuania

On one of the last days of summer, 30 August 2022, hundreds of Ukrainian children – who have found a new home in Vilnius as a result of the conflict – gathered for a picnic in the open air which was called “Goodbye, summer!” (in Lithuanian „Ate, vasara!“ and in Ukrainian Пікнік "До побачення, літо!" Для дітей України). Lots of educational activities, as well as dancing, soap bubble blowing, mastering of tricks, tasting delicacies, and even an open-air cinema was waiting for the children, and their parents and guardians.

The event was initiated by Save the Children Lithuania, along with art agency "Artscape" and other partners. Through this event, the organisers wanted to inspire children’s confidence, faith and courage in welcoming the new school year. Moreover, they wanted to highlight the fact that Lithuania is a safe place for Ukrainian children, who are still unable to return to their war-ravaged homeland, to have a bright and peaceful childhood.

The Lithuanian Safer Internet Centre was invited to join the event and was represented by two partners and their respective activities:

  1. Association LANGAS I ATEITI represented the Awareness Centre of the Lithuanian Safer Internet Centre. Picnic participants were invited to a decorated booth to take part in numerous activities which invited them to self-reflect about their behaviour on the internet. Questions were asked – and answered – in a playful manner: Which social networks do they use? How many? How much time do they spend online? What information and photos do they post? The organisers and children tried to find answers to these questions through discussion, interactive exercises, and quizzes.
  2. Childline, the Lithuanian Safer Internet Centre’s helpline, implemented activities addressed to developing children’s emotional literacy. Children were invited to express their feelings by drawing different colours. Childline’s consultants explained what natural human feelings are, and how important it is to recognise and express emotions. Childline informed the participating Ukrainian children and their parents about options for accessing emotional support and how to safely express their feelings. Childline presented channels of emotional support (via the phone and the internet) along with useful information about helpline services.

The event was attended by more than 300 children, their parents, and guardians.
