Monkey see, monkey do: Don’t believe everything on the net!

The Safer Internet Centre in Luxembourg launched a campaign highlighting the risks of deepfakes and other AI-generated content online under the slogan 'Monkey see, monkey do'.
Monkey See Monkey Do campaign in Luxembourg.

Awareness campaign on AI-generated disinformation

In the age of artificial intelligence (AI), digital disinformation is an increasing challenge, posing a threat to public trust. With this new campaign, BEE SECURE, the Safer Internet Centre of Luxembourg, aims to boost internet users' awareness of the risks of deepfakes and other types of AI-enabled disinformation.

The campaign also supports the priorities of the action plan ‘sécher.digital’ (English: safe.digitally) which has recently been launched by the Ministry of Education, children and youth. In November and December 2024, the campaign will educate internet users on AI techniques used to deceive and manipulate information. The main message is essential: Before sharing, question the information you find online.

Deepfakes: An increased risk of disinformation

The campaign provides information on advanced deepfake techniques, which are rapidly growing manipulation tools. Through videos and eye-catching content, BEE SECURE demonstrates how to spot deceptive attempts and promotes habits of verification to reduce the impact of disinformation. Three key questions encourage internet users to critically evaluate online information:

  1. Who is behind this information?
  2. Is the source reliable?
  3. Is this topic presented the same way elsewhere?

A fictional world for awareness: Welcome to the ‘Cyber Jungle’

To reach the public in an engaging way, BEE SECURE introduces a fictional environment called the ‘Cyber Jungle’, encouraging critical thinking with unique characters. With the humorous slogan ‘Monkey See, Monkey Do’ (Luxembourgish: ‘Een Af mécht der honnert’), the message is clear: Don’t believe or share everything you see online. This playful setting makes the message accessible to everyone, prompting reflection on the truthfulness of online content.

A campaign entirely created with AI tools

To illustrate both the power and risks of AI, all campaign content was developed using AI technology. This unique choice aims to demonstrate the capabilities and potential dangers of AI in content creation.

Multi-channel distribution for maximum impact

BEE SECURE will broadcast the campaign across various channels: social media, public displays, and with support from local influencers, to raise awareness of deepfake issues and encourage a more informed and responsible approach to online information.
