Highlights from the BIK Teacher corner webinar: exploring generative AI and persuasive design

On Thursday, 19 October 2023, a captivating webinar took place under the banner of the BIK Teacher corner. The event drew the attention of educators and teachers, with 23 participants coming together virtually to delve into the realm of generative AI and persuasive design. The engaging speaker, Gareth Cort, Online safety specialist, led the session, offering valuable insights into these two emerging fields.

In this webinar, Gareth Cort highlighted the significance of the BIK Teacher corner in fostering a safer and more enriching online environment for young learners. As the session progressed, Gareth dived into the heart of the matter, exploring generative AI. He explained the concept of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and discussed its potential benefits and challenges, emphasising its growing role in various sectors, including education.

One key takeaway from Gareth’s presentation was the dual nature of generative AIin education. He explained how this technology can help children and young people improve their skills and help them create personalised content. However, young learners may be tempted to use these tools to create content without truly understanding or engaging in the deep learning process. This is a major challenge for educators, harnessing the benefits of AI-driven content generation while ensuring that students also develop a deep understanding of the subject matter they are studying.

Moving on to persuasive design, Gareth introduced the audience to the principles of designing interfaces and content that encourage specific user behaviours and actions. He addressed the ethical aspects of persuasive design, emphasising the importance of using such techniques responsibly, especially when targeting younger audiences.

The webinar's interactive nature allowed participants to ask questions directly, seeking a deeper understanding of the topics presented. This dynamic engagement allowed attendees to gain valuable insight into not only generative AI and persuasive design but also to explore the value of the BIK Teacher corner to help teachers and educators in their classrooms. If you missed the last session, view the recording here. We encourage you to stay tuned for our upcoming webinars, where we will continue to explore innovative topics in education and digital literacy.
