Croatia celebrates Safer Internet Day 2024 with a high-level public forum

To mark Safer Internet Day 2024, the Croatian Safer Internet Centre hosted various activities promoting safer internet use under the slogan Safer Internet Day 2024 – gaming safely - together for a better internet.

The main event, a public forum named At the keyboard and console under control was hosted at Stara Pekara in Osijek, organised by the Croatian Safer Internet Centre, A1 Hrvatska (an internet service provider in Croatia), and partners including the Elementary School Franje Krežme, the Centre for Community Services Osijek, the Ministry of Science and Education, and the Justice Initiative.

The Croatian Safer Internet Centre hosted various activities for Safer Internet Day 2024

Alongside partners, other participants included the Office of the Ombudsperson for Children, HRT radio, the Osijek-Baranja police department, the Centre for Mental Health Care, Prevention and Outpatient Treatment of Addiction, the Teaching Institute of Public Health Split-Dalmatia County, the Society for Social Support, Rehabilitation Centre for Stress and Trauma, and the Centre for Community Services Maestral Split, as well as the Elementary School Mladost Osijek.

A total of 1,406 applications were received for SID 2024 workshops across four age groups, with 1,061 from elementary schools, 273 from high schools, and 72 additional applications. In total, the delivered workshops saw the participation of 14,981 children and young people, with 619 evaluation entries collected from experts who conducted the sessions, all yielding excellent feedback.

The activities included an online quiz that was completed 55,659 times, two podcasts with 327 views, a live public forum with 56 participants, an Instagram live Q&A with 55 participants and 356 views, an online trial class on the enrolment of a new generation of participants of the lifelong programme Benefits and risks of modern technologies with 34 experts, an online panel for experts – POP UP P@ANEL Digital well-being of children in care with 61 experts, an interactive lecture with 146 children aged 13-16, and a publication on responsible gaming for parents and professionals.

This year, Croatian youth panellists were actively involved: a debate of high school students was organised as part of a live event, and a representative of the youth panel participated in one of the panel discussions. In total, six youth panellists participated actively, with several more participating as volunteers.
