We asked Christina from Cyprus and Yevgeny from Malta to describe FOMO in their own words

What is FOMO in games?

FOMO, or fear of missing out, is a tactic used in some games to make players feel pressured to act quickly - whether it’s buying an item, joining an event, or completing a challenge. Developers create time-limited rewards or exclusive content that won’t return, which can sometimes make players feel like they’ll regret missing out.

Examples
  • Limited-time skins and items: Special cosmetics or characters are only available for a short time, encouraging quick purchases.
  • Exclusive events: Seasonal events or battle passes force players to grind through challenges before time runs out.
  • Daily login rewards: Some games offer streak-based bonuses, making players feel like they must log in daily or lose progress.
  • Flash sales and bundles: Discounts on premium items that expire soon, making players spend before thinking it through.
