Today is Safer Internet Day! This global initiative brings together organisations, companies, schools, families, and communities to promote a safer, more positive online experience for everyone. Celebrated in over 160 countries worldwide, this year marks the 23rd edition, under the theme ‘Together for a better internet.’
Organised as part of the European Commission’s Better Internet for Kids initiative, Safer Internet Day takes place every February, with a global focus on the second Tuesday of the month. Each participating country or organisation sets its own focus, often addressing topics such as artificial intelligence, social media, digital well-being, cyberbullying, safety by design, or video games.
What’s happening this year?
This year’s Safer Internet Day focus aligns closely with the forthcoming EU Action plan against cyberbullying, which aims to support a coordinated response to cyberbullying across the European Union. The plan builds on existing regulatory frameworks, such as the Digital Services Act (DSA), to ensure a high level of safety and protection for minors online.
To mark the occasion, new learning materials and interactive quizzes have been released to support:
- Teachers and educators, helping them guide students in navigating cyberbullying.
- Parents and caregivers, supporting them in protecting and empowering children in the digital world.
- Children and young people, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to stay safe online.
Additionally, Safer Internet Day is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on what Better Internet for Kids achieved over the past year, from policy development to implementation. Explore the progress and impact for BIK in 2025.
Who is involved?
Safer Internet Day is supported by hundreds of institutions and organisations across more than 160 countries worldwide.
