Popular guide for parents and caregivers updated
Media Council for Children and Young People, Save the Children Denmark and Centre for Digital Youth Care celebrated Safer Internet Day 2026 by relaunching an updated version of the Danish Safer Internet Centre’s popular guide for parents 'Children are gamers!'. The guide was originally published in 2021, and it continues to be sought after by parents, caregivers and relevant professionals.
It has been updated to include new and relevant information on children and young people's use of digital games. It covers such themes as in-game purchases, time spent on gaming, retention in video games and much more. Some mechanisms in video games, such as microtransactions and retention strategies, are hard to navigate, and can be particularly hard for children and young people. Therefore, the guide also encourages parents and caregivers to have a continuous dialogue with their child on video games.
Included in the update, is a brand-new chapter with a focus on video gameinfluencers. Video game influencers have been the focus of public debate in Denmark for the past couple of months. The Danish Safer Internet Centre deemed that a specific focus on this branch of influencers is extremely relevant for parents.
The guide is promoted through the channels of the Danish awareness centre and parents, schools and other relevant intuitions can order free physical copies.
The resource is accessible via the BIK resource directory.

Furthermore, the Media Council for Children and Young People and Centre for Digital Youth Care have collaborated on updating their shared publication of specific guides for video games and video game-related platforms.
The selection of video games and platforms is based on concrete results of a survey on Danish children and young people's video game habits, in order to secure that the selection of titles is relevant. The guides are primarily created for relevant professionals working with children and young people in after school settings, but they are also relevant and freely available to parents and caregivers, who may seek knowledge on a specific game.
