Today, the Insafe network of European Safer Internet Centres (SICs) meets for another edition of the bi-annual training meeting. This event is an opportunity to facilitate sharing of experience and good practices between network countries, to explore areas of common ground, and opportunities for closer working between awareness raising, helpline, and youth participation strands. For the first time since the pandemic, the training meeting is being held face-to-face in Brussels, Belgium.
This edition of the Insafe Training meeting includes a series of activities spanning over two days. Today, the activities kick off with a session dedicated to helplines to be hosted at Meta offices in Brussels, a networking opportunity with members of the Intergroup on Children's Rights at the European Parliament, and a networking dinner.
The formal Insafe Training meeting will take place on Wednesday, 26 October. The meeting will commence with a keynote address on gaming, exploring this digital technology and its impact on a child’s well-being. This session will provide insights about the positives and opportunities – as well as challenges and ethical issues – related to gaming. A panel discussion will then build on the mentioned issues, focusing on industry’s approach to the concerns raised by gaming – how are they responding? What are they putting in place to reduce the challenges that young people face when gaming? Additionally, PEGI and Discord will provide a focused update on the industry perspective on gaming later in the day.
As it has been three years since there was last a physical meeting of the network, a dedicated session will provide an opportunity for colleagues to interact and talk about their Safer Internet Centres (SICs) and the work they are currently doing, capitalising on the capacity-building nature of the Insafe network. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss and network over a range of additional, specific topics and concerns – such as how to reach the parents and carers of children with disabilities, good practices on how to involve industry in awareness-raising initiatives, new tools developed to help young people get an overview of their social media activity, while the “influencer academy” and other SIC projects will be showcased.
The meeting will also include a network planning session for the forthcoming edition of Safer Internet Day, taking place on Tuesday, 7 February 2023 and marking the 20th anniversary of the celebration, and a customary resource competition to showcase the diverse range of educational resources and videos created by the network, this time focusing on resources responding to online conduct issues.
