The CIS Digital Camp, organised by the Portuguese Safer Internet Centre and its partners, took place from 24 to 28 July 2023 in the city of Portalegre. For five days, 46 secondary school and vocational school students were able to learn how to use the internet safely.
In July 2023, Portalegre was the meeting place for 46 secondary and vocational school students. The goal was simple: fun and educational activities to promote digital literacy and to ensure the necessary knowledge to surf the internet safely.
The academy's activities followed a playful but educational methodology and were developed together with several CIS partners in the different schools of the Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre (IPP). An approach based on hands-on education was chosen, using study visits, practical exercises, and the exchange of testimonials for informal and collaborative learning.
For example, on the first day, participants had to develop an idea based on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that brought innovation and change with one main goal - to make the internet safe.
Another highlight of the programme was the various workshops run by CIS partners such as the Portuguese Association for Victim Assistance (APAV), the Portuguese National Cybersecurity Centre (CNCS) and the Portuguese Institute for Sport and Youth (IPDJ). These actions focused on topics such as internet safety and the link between mental health and digital technologies or artificial intelligence.
In addition to the activities directly related to the theme, several other initiatives were also organised - nature walks, water sports and a sunset party - aimed at strengthening bonds between participants and developing transversal skills such as teamwork, leadership or communication skills.
The week's activities also included a visit from the Secretary of State for Digitisation and Administrative Modernisation, Mário Campolargo, who highlighted the "fundamental" role of initiatives such as the CIS Digital Camp, as they make it possible to teach young people "all the techniques and methods that allow them to surf the internet safely".
These young people are the adults of the future who will transform our society into one that treats the digital for you.
