From 4 to 7 July 2024, the Bootcamp for Girls took place at the University of Aveiro in Portugal. The Portuguese Safer Internet Centre shared some testimonials from a group of participants.
‘From 4 to 7 July, we had an unforgettable experience at the Bootcamp for Girls in Aveiro. It was four intense days of learning and fun, where we learned about Capture the Flag (CTF) competitions and enjoyed trying to complete as many challenges as possible. However, it wasn't all about cybersecurity, there was also time to explore the city and take part in a variety of fun activities with the wonderful people (both Portuguese and of other nationalities) we met at the bootcamp. The teachers, trainers and everyone involved in the project were incredibly welcoming and we would love to experience the Bootcamp for Girls again. We believe it is a great way to spark interest in the field of cybersecurity and computer science in general.’

‘Have you ever thought about immersing yourself in the world of cybersecurity and testing your skills in Capture the Flag (CTF) competitions? If so, then the Bootcamp for Girls is the perfect opportunity for you! I recently had the privilege of attending this incredible girls-only event, and I can say that it was a life-changing experience. I'd never done CTFs before, but the coaches were extremely friendly and helpful, always ready to help and answer questions. From the very first moment I felt welcomed and encouraged to explore and learn. The instructors and organisers of the bootcamp were also exceptional. In addition to the intensive cybersecurity sessions, we had fun activities such as trips on the Moliceiros, seeing the beautiful city of Aveiro, watching a boat race and enjoying dinners that were perfect for socialising and making new friends. If you're a girl interested in cybersecurity or just want to learn more about the fascinating world of CTFs, I highly recommend the Bootcamp for Girls.’

‘I recently attended a four-day cybersecurity bootcamp for girls. During this enriching experience, I deepened my knowledge of cybersecurity and learned how to solve CTFs (Capture The Flag) with the European team. It was an incredible opportunity full of learning and fun moments. I highly recommend everyone to try this initiative as it is an excellent way to gain new skills and meet people interested in the field. Learning about cyber security helps us to protect our information and stay safe online.’

‘I am 17 years old and in high school and I loved the experience at the Bootcamp for Girls in Aveiro. It was my first time working with CTF and I found it extremely interesting because we learned a lot in a short time. It was a wonderful introduction to CTFs - even with little background knowledge, I was able to keep up and improve as the days went by. We had cybersecurity workshops where we solved practical challenges that tested our skills and creativity. We also worked in teams to solve puzzles, and each victory was celebrated with great joy. The environment was fantastic, surrounded by amazing people, all motivated and willing to help each other.’

‘On 6 and 7 July, I had the privilege of attending the Bootcamp for Girls.
As a cybersecurity student and professional in the programming field, a male-dominated field where it is difficult to find role models and examples that inspire us as women. It is often discouraging to be the only or one of the few women in the room.
This weekend was inspiring to see and meet so many girls and women who share my passion for cybersecurity.
The debates and classroom moments were crucial for developing technical skills in the field, but it was during the social and team-building moments that I really got to know the women around me, of similar ages but from different parts of the world. It was a unique opportunity to share stories and life experiences that enrich, inspire, and allow us to grow.
I can say that in those two days, for the first time in my academic and professional journey, I felt part of a community. If I ever had fears and apprehensions about exploring and learning in the field, the Bootcamp was undoubtedly an inspiring experience that removedthem.’
