The sex positive approach of the guide encourages to critically review media content and discuss the impact of media outlets on young people. From this perspective, sexuality and sex are seen as positive and natural features of a person, as well as a beneficial health resource. This approach also implies the acceptance of diverse ways to demonstrate sexuality, be in a relationship, and have consensual sex, or not to have sex at all.
The sex positive approach is in line with the Finnish Safer Internet Centre’s more general approach of promoting critical thinking when using media outlets. Furthermore, previous research shows that a sex positive approach can foster healthy media relationships and support the sexual development of young people.
In addition to an introduction to the topic, the guide includes three main sections: Sex in the media, Social media, and Porn. Each section contains a glossary, lesson plans and links to additional materials, guides and helplines.
The guide has both been published on a course platform and in a more traditional pdf format. It is available in Finnish and will soon be published in Swedish as well. The localisation of the material is possible. In order to do so, you can contact the publisher.
The guide is available on the Finnish Safer Internet Centre website.
