About the organisation
Safer Internet Centre (SIC) Slovenia is the national project promoting and ensuring a better internet for kids.
The project is co-financed by the European Health and Digital Executive Agency (HaDEA); in Slovenia financial support also comes from the Ministry of Digital Transformation. The project is run by a consortium of partners coordinated by the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Ljubljana, the Academic and Research Network of Slovenia (ARNES), the Slovenian Association of Friends of Youth (ZPMS), and the Youth Information and Counselling Center of Slovenia (MISSS).
Awareness centre
As an awareness centre, Safe.si imparts information to its five target groups about online opportunities and risks. The project aims to provide children, teenagers, parents, teachers and other professionals who work with children (e.g. childcare workers, social workers, health personnel, sports coaches, club leaders) with the knowledge and tools that they require to foster digital literacy and empowerment of children and teenagers, as well as youth participation. The primary objective is to help all children and teenagers to develop their digital skills and competences and to enable them to actively participate by giving them a say in the digital environment.
The centre initiates, coordinates and participates in a broad range of activities and initiatives with the aim of raising awareness in this area.

Hotline
Hotline Spletno oko has enabled internet users to anonymously report child sexual abuse material since March 2007. The hotline’s mission is to reduce the amount of child sexual abuse material online in close cooperation with the police, internet service providers (ISPs), and other governmental and non-governmental organisations in Slovenia. Spletno oko is a longstanding member of the global network of internet hotlines INHOPE.
The hotline achieves its mission by engaging in the following activities: hotline operation (which enables anonymous reporting of online child sexual abuse material), awareness raising about child sexual abuse online, fast and effective processing of received reports, and cooperation with other hotlines around the world.
Contact and opening times
1. Hotline reporting form. Open 24/7.
2. E-mail address: info@spletno-oko.si. From 8AM-4PM (CEST).

Youth participation
Coordination of youth participation activities enables discussions with children and young people about their online experiences. The experiences of young people are very valuable, as they provide us with first-hand information about what challenges they actually face when using the Internet.
The goal is to gain their opinions and suggestions and include them in discovering new trends, risks and knowledge gaps in order to prepare relevant awareness-raising resources, web content, workshops and other activities that meet their needs and give them the knowledge they need.
Youth panellists are actively involved in various activities in the field of online safety, such as assistance in the preparation of promotional and educational content for young people and participation in media campaigns and youth events. They also have the opportunity to represent Slovenian youth at international events and activities that take place within the framework of the international INSAFE network or of the European Commission and thus take their voice to political decision-makers and others who influence the development of the Internet.
Special attention is given to engagement of children from disadvantaged and vulnerable backgrounds (e.g., children with an immigrant background, children living in material deprivation/poverty, children with disruptive behaviour and/or emotional problems, children with disabilities etc.) ensuring that they also have their needs addressed and voices heard.
How can you get involved?
Youth panel activities are many times incorporated in already existing youth activities in schools, youth centres, youth homes, events, summer camps, specialized institutions etc. in order to include online safety content as an important youth topic.
Children and young people can show their interest for joining SIC Slovenia & youth panel activities:
• at all (primary and secondary) schools and youth centres in Slovenia where AC Safe.si workshops for children and young people are organized,
• at youth events where AC Safe.si activities are presented,
• directly at AC Safe.si by:
- Sending an e-mail to: izobrazevanja@safe.si

Key successes
The Slovenian Awareness Centre has positioned itself as the key resource and knowledge base for children’s use of the internet and mobile technologies in Slovenia. The project has achieved excellent results in collaboration with schools. The AC has been involved actively in educating young people, parents and teachers about the opportunities and potential risks of using the internet since 2007. It is one of the most recognised brands in Slovenia offering training on online safety. On average, the Safe.si AC visits more than 330 schools and educates more than 23,000 youngsters, parents and teachers annually.
Every year, the Slovenian AC encourages schools to prepare their own activities for SID. To encourage participation effectively, we prepare a SID Toolkit every year, which includes lesson plans with activities for different age groups, decision trees, leaflets, videos, quizzes, test, surveys and other interesting tools that can be used in the classroom. The SID (Safer Internet Day) celebrations in Slovenia for both 2023 and 2024 received support from national governmental institutions. During the central SID events in both years, the opening speech was delivered by the Minister from the Ministry of Education. Additionally, in the 2024 celebration, the Minister from the Ministry of Digital Transformation played a significant role as one of the keynote speakers during the conference dedicated to teachers and other school professionals working with children.
The hotline, in collaboration with the Police and the Association of Informatics and Telecommunications at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Slovenia, organises well-known annual conference on child sexual abuse images that brings together hundreds of stakeholders (e.g. police, prosecutors’ offices, courts, social services, NGOs, educators and industry leaders). The hotline organized an event in September 2022 with 220 attendees and in September 2023 with 300 attendees live and online, lectures by national and international experts.
