About the organisation

Netvís – Netöryggismiðstöð Íslands operates the Icelandic Safer Internet Centre (SIC-IS). It runs as a department within the Icelandic Media Commission. The Icelandic Media Commission is an independent public authority under the Ministry of Culture, Innovation and Higher Education. The Media Commisson works to support media diversity, pluralism, accessibility, freedom of expression and the right to information. We strive, in particular, to encourage respect for the protection of minors. Also, we have the task of guiding all sectors of the population to enhance media literacy. The Media Commission has the role of the SIC coordinator in Iceland.

Awareness centre

Netvis acts as the awareness centre for Social Cyber Security and Media Literacy in Iceland.

Our role is to encourage better use of technology and media through targeted education, awareness campaigns and various services. Our goal is to strengthen conceptual understanding, awareness and empowerment of the public.

We want to promote social sustainability in the digital world and respect the human rights of children in the digital environment, as described in the general comments of the United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child, no. 25. Furthermore, to support the European Union's BIK+ policy and support the implementation of the Digital Services Act, when that legislation comes into force in Iceland.

An important part of fulfilling the state's obligations under the Convention on the Rights of the Child, cf. Act no. 19/2013, is to ensure equal access to education for children and to take appropriate measures to protect children from violence and abuse online.

The project partners (consortium) form a steering committee together with representatives of ministries. There is also an active Netvís Advisory Board consisting of a broad group of stakeholders.

Helpline

The Icelandic Red Cross operates the SIC Iceland helpline, 1717.is. It provides free counselling and psychosocial support to children and adults on online challenges, such as violence and bullying.
