Vision paper: Digital media in relation to exercise in 0-4 year olds

In this document you can read about the vision of the Knowledge Center Sport & Exercise, Trimbos Institute and the Dutch Media Literacy Network on digital media use in relation to exercise in 0-4 year olds. In addition, you will receive tips on how to support parents with their digital media education.

Regular exercise is important for the health and proper development of young children. This includes, in accordance with the exercise advice for 0-4 year olds, limiting prolonged periods of sitting down and screen time. Exercise is increasingly associated negatively with media use; media use is often considered detrimental to healthy exercise.

How do we, as professionals, deal with this? It is impossible to imagine our lives without digital media, nor from that of young children. In addition, many parents see benefits of using digital media with their children. An important, recurring question is therefore whether and to what extent young children are allowed to use digital media. The answer to this can help you as a professional in childcare, youth healthcare or as a children's physiotherapist or neighborhood sports coach in the guidance of young children and in providing advice to parents.
