This updated version of Dutch Media Literacy Network's Media Literacy Competency Model for 2021 presents our definition of media literacy in a clear visual model. This model makes clear our definition of media literacy, forms a starting point for activities, projects and services for media literacy professionals, can be used for the development of research and tools to monitor media literacy among various target groups and forms the basis for the activities of Netwerk Mediawijsheid, such as Media Literacy Week, the challenge #NLmediawijs and the educative game MediaMasters.

In 2019 the Network settled on 'everyone media literate' as our new mission statement. And a new mission statement required a new competency model. The 2021 version offers eight media literacy competencies and ten areas in which the Dutch can achieve tangible results with their media use.
