Something 'BIK' has happened...

Introducing the new Better Internet for Kids (BIK) platform

BIK platform promo banner

In case you missed it last week, we are delighted to announce that the new and improved Better Internet for Kids platform is now live! Now sitting within the European Commission's Europa domain – with the URL better-internet-for-kids.europa.eu – the platform is the new online home of the BIK initiative, the European Union-funded programme that strives to create a better and safer internet for Europe’s children and youth.

Underpinned by the aims and outputs of the European strategy for a better internet for kids (BIK+), the platform provides information, guidance and resources on better internet issues from the joint Insafe-INHOPE network of Safer Internet Centres in Europe and other key stakeholders for ALL those who support or educate children and young people in their online lives.

See the Weekly Update EXTRA mailing from last week for more information, or read the launch article on the new platform. You can also learn more about the BIK Knowledge hub here - a new European central access point for information, evidence, policy, and practice insights.

Come and explore more at better-internet-for-kids.europa.eu; we look forward to your visit!

New BIK platform onboarding continues this week

Onboarding for the new BIK platform will continue this week.

Following on from Friday's mailing to SIC onboarding contacts, please now proceed with adding organisation details for each member organisation of the SIC consortium. Once these organisations' entries have been approved, we can open the registration process for SIC staff working within the consortium organisations.

SIC colleagues, please wait until your SIC Coordinator/onboarding contact instructs you to register

If you have not yet designated an onboarding contact for your SIC (or SIC+), please contact the support helpdesk with your contact details as soon as possible. Any other queries regarding the new platform can also be directed to the support helpdesk.

Please note that sign-in is only needed to access the community area of the new platform; the public platform can be accessed and browsed without registration.

Events and campaigns

First full roll-out of MediaSmartOnline coming soon!

[UPDATED, FOR INFORMATION AND ACTION]

As you know, as part of the BIK+ strategy and BIK Phase 5, we planned to scope, pilot, and organise an EU-wide media literacy awareness-raising campaign, #MediaSmartOnline, in collaboration with the Insafe network of Safer Internet Centres (SICs). The main objective is to spotlight existing media literacy initiatives and actions across the network, and build synergies and opportunities for collaboration whenever possible.

We ran the campaign's first pilot test between March and April 2024 and worked with the Media Literacy Campaign Working Group (MLC-WG) over the summer to scale activities to achieve the first full roll-out of MediaSmartOnline across the whole networkin autumn 2024. From there, we will progressively build it into the BIK calendar of annual campaigns.

We are almost ready to start! The first full roll-out will start on Thursday, 24 October 2024 (the first day of the Global Media and Information Literacy Week) and run for approximately one month, ending on Safer Internet Forum (this year, on 21 November 2024). For future editions of the campaign, we note that Safer Internet Forum dates may change significantly from year to year – if that is the case, the campaign will typically run for one calendar month.

The campaigning materials for the network are now ready – please download the communications package here and the visuals here (both in the community of the new BIK platform). All SICs have also been contacted by email.

If you have any questions, please contact Annarita.

Safer Internet Forum 2024: registration is now open

Navigating the future of education: Educators' insights on AI integration and challenges in Greece, Hungary, Latvia, Ireland and Armenia

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become widespread at all levels of education. AI in education (AIEd) refers to a wide range of systems and tools that mimic human intelligence and serve various educational purposes, such as teaching assistants, course creation tools, chatbots, image and video generation, audio, research, animation, text-to-speech, presentations, and so on. Understanding teachers' perceptions of AIEd is essential for its effective integration into the education system.

The work of INHOPE hotlines in the first half of 2024 — Data, trends and new opportunities

Hotline work in numbers

Key statistics highlight that 2024 started with a significant rise in reports received by the 29 hotlines co-funded by the European Commission. From January to June 2024, EC co-funded hotlines received a total of 648,949 public reports regarding URLs containing potentially illegal content, marking a 47 per cent increase compared to the previous two quarters. Notably, the majority of these reports (98.81 per cent) are not duplicate reports, indicating they contain new content.

Latest helpline trends: Quarter 2, 2024

The most recent helpline data covers the period from April to June 2024. There were over 13,700 contacts made to the network which is a reduction on the previous reporting period. The beginning of the summer period is usually quieter and, in some countries, schools finish early in June which can have an impact on contacts that helplines receive.

Safer Internet Day 2004

The first Safer Internet Day (SID) took place on 6 February 2004, and was the brainchild of the SafeBorders project. It was celebrated in 14 countries (13 EU countries and Australia).

Since then, the popularity of SID has continued to grow year after year.

Safer internet...together

Safer Internet Day 2005

8 February 2005 was the first SID organised by the Insafe network. The number of countries taking part more than doubled with 30 countries and 65 organisations participating worldwide including Russia and Singapore as new additions.

The 2005 campaign was marked by an internet adventure storytelling contest for children, which was turned into a book of stories and then published.
