The conference and workshop

On Tuesday, 6 February 2024, a conference titled Together for a better internet was organised by the Cyprus Pedagogical Institute and the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, with the support of other partners of the Cyprus Safer Internet Centre (CyberSafety and the National Strategy for a Better Internet for Children in Cyprus). The conference was attended by students from primary, secondary general and secondary technical, vocational education and training, and teachers from all over Cyprus.

In a brief welcome address, the Deputy Director of the Pedagogical Institute, Elena Hadjikakou, stressed the importance of empowering teachers, children and parents for the safe use of the internet and the development of digital skills; a task that is carried out through the Pedagogical Institute. The Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Athena Michaelidou, in her address, said that digital education and the modernisation of our educational system, through the integration of new technologies in teaching and learning, and the development of digital skills of teachers, students and pupils, are a key objective of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth and the government programme.

This was followed by a presentation of the actions of the CYberSafety Youth Panel. The session ended with the interactive workshop, News-feed live, presented by actors Polyxeni Savvas, Elena Kallinikou, and Dimitris Chimonas.

Aiming to strengthen efforts for creative and safe use of the internet, the workshop contributed to raising awareness and information on the proper use of the internet, thus empowering teachers and students to become critical-thinking citizens in the digital society and to develop a positive attitude towards the use of the internet.
