Safer Internet Day 2024 in Colombia

Safer Internet Day campaign efforts in Colombia addressed one of the main concerns of parents and caregivers when it comes to their children: determining the appropriate timing and manner for introducing a child to their first electronic device.

Red PaPaz is committed to creating nurturing environments for children and young people. This aligns with its overarching purpose of advocating for protecting children's and young people's rights in Colombia and Latin America, and strengthening the capacities of the relevant actors to guarantee their effective fulfilment. As part of its mission, Red PaPaz recognises the importance of prioritising the defence and promotion of the rights of early childhood (ages 0 to 8), and ensuring children and young people's rights in the digital environment.

To realise this, Red PaPaz partnered with Power of Zero to implement an innovative campaign in Colombia that encourages conversations about using electronic devices with children from an early age. This campaign contains an animated series to watch together as a family, commitments to be made by children, and a guide for parents and caregivers. The campaign has been innovative in taking on tools and developing content intended to be shared by parents and caregivers with their children, seeking to generate and create appropriate conversations about the different ways in which devices can be used by children and adolescents.

The vision is that the products disseminated for Safer Internet Day 2024 become an integral part of Red PaPaz's action for a safer digital environment. To this end, the campaign has also been adapted and shared with 700 schools that are part of Red PaPaz's network of partner educational institutions.

This initiative aims to achieve two objectives. Firstly, it seeks to develop specific content for young children, understanding the current lack of content for this sector of the population. Secondly, it addresses a prominent concern voiced within the organisation by parents, caregivers, and educators: the difficulties of managing children's screen time and fostering a healthy family environment.
