The Secretary General of the CIPDR (Comité Interministériel de Prévention de la Délinquance et de la Radicalisation), Christian Gravel, Deputy Laetitia Avia, as well as representatives from Gendarmerie Nationale, Meta, Google, Yubo TikTok, ARCOM, Aleph Networks, DILCRAH participated in this event to discuss how to educate and protect children from harmful content on the internet. The opening speech was given by Marlène Schiappa, French Minister delegate in charge of citizenship, linked to the Minister of the Interior. 

The first panel focused on possible political measures to protect the youth from hateful messages online. The participants of the second panel discussed how to best educate minors about a safe online behaviour, and options such as educating children and young people on how to responsibly navigate the internet, or the role of parents, teachers and online platforms were addressed. The third panel touched upon the role of technology, by introducing better ways of moderation. 

During this event, Point de Contact launched a new tool to be added to the hotline’s three reporting tools: it is now possible to capture video streams, thus allowing the public to report live. Point de Contact also marked February as the Safer Internet Month by launching two new awareness-raising comics focusing on the issues of online hate and apology for terrorism.  

Additionally, a Twitter Spaces live discussion co-hosted by DG CONNECT and DG HOME of the European Commission took place on Safer Internet Day 2022, and furtherly explored initiatives to protect children and young people online, with the participation of Nikoleta Lydaki Simantiri. The recording of the Twitter Spaces will be available until 7 March 2022.
