The return to school for the younger students is an opportunity to commit to adopting good habits and instilling in them the proper use of technology both inside and outside the classroom. Families and educators return to the routine with them, and it is in their hands to teach and provide them with proper digital education.
Technology is a part of children's lives from an early age, both at home and in the classroom once they begin their educational journey, where devices are introduced to support new methods and ways of learning.
Families and educators can contribute to ensuring a cybersecure back-to-school by promoting the responsible use of technology and cybersecurity, identifying good digital security practices to apply both at home and in the school context, and encouraging safe behaviours in the everyday use of devices and digital platforms. This includes practices such as using secure passwords along with a second authentication factor, or adjusting privacy settings.
It is also important to talk openly about the main digital risks that may arise at the start of the school year, such as cyberbullying, identity theft, fraud, access to inappropriate content, or the sharing of private images, among others, as well as how to prevent them. The goal is to promote their responsibility and prevent them from harming others, as well as to make them aware that these things can happen to anyone. If they encounter these issues in their environment or are affected by them, they should feel comfortable speaking to a trusted adult and asking for help.
That’s why the start of the school year is a great time to educate young people, as well as their families and educators, in cybersecurity, as they are responsible for learning both inside and outside the classroom.
At INCIBE, we are launching an awareness campaign on #VueltaAlColeCibersegura, where, through various visual, simple, and engaging resources, we address topics aimed at educators and families.
Upon their return to the classroom, educators will find information on topics such as reviewing the school’s procedures, the sharing of minors' images by the school, the importance of promoting good practices with school devices, and how to integrate cybersecurity training. On the other hand, families will have access to content on managing screen time through time vouchers and commitment agreements, as well as configuring devices at home, among other things.
