Parents & Media surveys attitudes towards children’s media use among parents and other caretakers with children aged 0-18 years. It is one of three reports in the series Kids and Media based on Sweden’s largest survey on children's media habits and attitudes. This survey is carried out every second year. The parents answer questions concerning their children’s media use and their opinions about it.
The survey compares the parents’ attitudes towards various media such as tv/film, gaming, social media and, for the first time, also Youtube. The negative attitudes towards social media have been reinforced. Approximately 50 % of parents with children in the age group 13-16 years believe their kids spend too much time with social media and more than half of the parents with children aged 0-18 years completely or to a large extent believe that social media is addictive and steals too much time from other activities. In addition to that, parents are much less satisfied with the societal protection of children when children use the internet and play digital games, compared to when children go to the cinema
Less parents with children aged 9-18 than in the last survey support the statement that gaming is addictive and that it steals time from other activities. Youtube gets more negative comments from the parents than positive.
Many parents, 70 %, post photos or videos of their kids but only one third of the parents that publish photos or videos of their children ask for permission from their kids.
Parents biggest concern in all age groups are other adults with sexual interest, that they might seek sexual contact with their kids, or give sexual comments or suggestions and that concern is higher among parents of girls than boys.
