Guide for parents: 7 tips how to talk to your child about internet safety

To encourage parents to keep close communication with child about their virtual life, it is important to find time to have conversations about safe and responsible use of the Internet. Often what parents think their child/teen is doing online is different from what the child is actually doing online. Therefore, conversations about their child’s virtual life will help parents better understand what they like to do online, as well as talk over the risks on the Internet so that he/she can protect himself. Regular conversations will promote trust between parent and child, which is essential in cases when the child gets into trouble e.g. experience online abuse and any form of online violence because in that case, he/she will ask help and report to parents.

The practical guide includes advices how to start conversion suggesting what questions should be asked and how to plan conversation step by step to talk over the internet safety issues. The tips will also help parents agree with their child on rules for maintaining a healthy balance between online and offline activities.
