Violence on the Internet

Title (original language): Βία στο διαδίκτυο

The "Violence on the Internet" survey was carried out  by the Hellenic Center for Safer Internet at FORTH among 4,800 adolescents, under the approval of the Ministry of Education, Religious Affairs and Sports.

The report found that almost half of adolescents have been exposed as observers to cases of violence on the Internet and 13% of adolescents have experienced online violence.

It also found that 38% of adolescents do not know how to report incidents of online violence on platforms. As the research shows, adolescents are not familiar with basic forms of violence such as gender-based violence or hate speech, which acts as a deterrent in recognizing these forms of violence when they encounter them. More specifically, 69% either do not know at all or are not sure what gender-based online violence is, while 80% state that they do not know what hate speech on the internet is.

The research highlights the need for more information for adolescents on appropriate ways to react when they experience or encounter violence online.

The percentage of teenagers who consider online violence to be a big problem for minors is impressive (83%) while 44% do not feel safe when using the internet. Teenagers seem to feel less safe on social networking platforms and live streaming platforms (46%), followed by online gaming platforms, chat rooms (27%) and instant messaging environments (26%).
