Study "Digital Skills Austria, 20232

Title (original language): Studie "Digital Skills Austria, 2023"

The ""Digital Skills Austria"" investigates Austrians' abilities to orient themselves, navigate, and, in particular, shape the digital space. The study was first conducted in 2022 on behalf of RTR-GmbH under the direction of Associate Professor Dr. Thomas Steinmaurer (Paris Lodron University of Salzburg) and expanded in 2023. For the study, Austrians were again surveyed using an online questionnaire in July/August 2023 to assess their digital skills. Sociodemographic data, personal attitudes toward technology, digital knowledge, and media usage behavior were also collected.

New additions included questions about previously completed training courses and a competency test to assess the respondents’ skills.

The study found that sociodemographic characteristics do not explain people's differences in ability. It highlights, among other things, that traditional media providers can play an important role in gaining greater knowledge about how digital works; that personal attitude has a major influence on the ability to deal with new technologies and the digital world; and that education and especially subject-specific training can compensate for many deficits, as it gives people more self-confidence and reduces fears.

Methodology

The study is based on a quantitative online survey conducted in July and August 2023, utilizing an Online Access Panel to survey 2087 individuals aged 16 and over from the Austrian online population. The sample was drawn using a quota procedure (structured by age, gender, education level, and residence) to reflect the demographics of the Austrian residential population. The methodology employed a proprietary questionnaire developed by the research team, incorporating established international instruments.
