Perception of Cybercrime among Pupils at the Second Level of Primary Schools

Title (original language): Vnímání kyberkriminality mezi dětmi (výzkumná zpráva)

The study "Perception of cybercrime among pupils at the second level of primary schools" was carried out within the framework of the project "Regions for a Safe Internet", the results of which were presented on Safer Internet Day 2024. The research was carried out  based on cooperation between the Vysoÿina Region and the Police of the Czech Republic. The Cybercrime Perception Survey was initially conducted in 2018 when 50,917 respondents participated and has now been repeated five years later to compare the results. The aim of the research was to find out in which direction the knowledge of cybercrime and experience with it has shifted. The research focuses not only on quantitative data analysis, but also on comparing it from 2018 with current data. The expected return was 30,000 questionnaires, which was significantly exceeded, as schools were interested in the questionnaire survey. The status at the end of 2023 showed that pupils still have insufficient awareness of what they can or cannot do online, or what behaviour is considered cybercrime.

Funded by:

The Regions for a Safe Internet project is implemented under the auspices of the Association of Regions of the Czech Republic. 14 regions of the Czech Republic are involved in the project. The project partners are the CZ.NIC association, the Police of the Czech Republic, and Microsoft and Gordic.

Methodology

The research was conducted using a quantitative questionnaire survey using anonymous online questionnaires. The questionnaires were distributed to schools in cooperation with the regional coordinators of the KPBI project, through the education departments of individual regional offices, crime prevention managers, etc. Information about the questionnaire was sent to school principals or school prevention methods. They received the questionnaires with a cover letter for the school principal and instructions for teachers who would fill out the questionnaires with students. Schools were recommended to have teachers fill out the questionnaires with students during a computer science lesson or a similar subject. The research methodology and the way the questionnaires were distributed were tested in previous research and proved successful.
