Parents & Media 2023

Title (original language): Föräldrar & medier 2023

Föräldrar & medier 2023"" investigates Swedish parents' perceptions of media and their children's (0-18 years) media use, highlighting discrepancies between parental and child views on digital lives. Key findings include increased parental scepticism towards social media, seen as time-consuming and potentially harmful, and a decline in belief that games teach good things. Parents express high worry about online sexual contact, bullying, and media addiction, though actual occurrences are reported less frequently. Concerns about excessive time on mobile phones, social media, and games have risen, with parents often underestimating media's interference with other activities like homework and sleep. While parents feel most responsible for protection, state and authority responsibility is increasingly acknowledged. Notably, about 70% of parents of 0-8 year olds upload their children's images to social media, often without permission.

Methodology

The ""Föräldrar & medier 2023"" report is a statistical investigation of guardians' attitudes towards media and their children's (0-18 years) media usage in Sweden. Data were collected by Statistics Sweden (SCB) via web and paper questionnaires from 24 August to 16 December 2022. An unrestricted random sample of 10,991 parents, stratified by child's age, was invited. Response rates, ranging from 24.4% to 29%, were lower than in 2018, leading to the application of calibration weights to mitigate non-response bias. The study combined questionnaire data with register data on demographics and background. Questions maintained consistency with prior surveys for time comparisons but were updated for the current media landscape, such as including specific YouTube questions. Most reported comparisons achieved 0.05 statistical significance. Challenges include media convergence obscuring media distinctions and observed discrepancies between parental and child self-reports.
