The 2023 edition of the Istat survey on “Children and young people: behavior, attitudes, and future projects,” was conducted by the Istituto nazionale di statistica (Istat) between 1 October and 20 December 2023. Its objective was to collect information on fundamental aspects of life, including social relationships, use of social media, citizenship, sense of belonging, poverty, and future plans for residents in Italy aged 11 to 19. Findings confirmed the cohort as digital natives, with almost 85% having a social media profile, where girls are generally more connected than boys. The survey also revealed significant anxieties, with 32.3% expressing fear of the future, and 34% aspiring to live abroad.

Methodology
The methodology employed the CAWI (Computer Assisted Web Interviewing) technique exclusively, using an online questionnaire. Key innovations included optimizing the questionnaire for use via smartphone or tablet and providing access via a QR code. The survey aimed to be inclusive, offering the questionnaire in Italian and nine other languages. The target population was the 11–19 age group. The sample was designed to be statistically representative, stratified by region, citizenship (seven categories, including Italian and the five most numerous foreign citizenships), and age classes (11–13 and 14–19). Approximately 108,000 young people were selected, with 39,214 ultimately responding. The questionnaire was divided into eight sections, covering topics from school life to citizenship and future plans, and included an open-ended question soliciting suggestions for improvement.
