Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC)

Title (original language): Eesti kooliõpilaste tervisekäitumine

The Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study (HBSC) is a forty-year-old international study of the lifestyles and well-being of young people, conducted every four years in most European countries and North America.

The HBSC network currently includes 51 countries/regions. The survey has been conducted in Estonia since 1993. Information on the history of the survey and international results can be found on the website https://www.hbsc.org . Estonian survey results and published publications can be found on the website of the National Institute of Health and Research.

The aim of the survey is to periodically collect nationwide information on the health behaviour, health status and well-being of basic school students. In addition to subjective assessments of their own health and risk behaviour, respondents are also asked about their assessments of family and friendship relationships and the school environment.

The report provides a topic-by-topic overview of the health and risk behaviour of young people in 2022 and assesses changes over recent years, using the results of previous HBSC surveys conducted in Estonia.

Methodology

The survey is anonymously conducted by 11-, 13- and 15-year-old students from Estonian and Russian-language general education schools. The last survey in Estonia took place from November 2021 to March 2022. The analyzed dataset contains data from 4,862 students (response rate 75%). The survey was conducted as an online survey.
