MediaSmartOnline: Mapping the current EU landscape of media literacy initiatives

Media literacy in Europe is characterised by being a rather diverse and somewhat fragmented area of interest with a wide variety of different players involved ranging from supra-national agencies to national and regional policymakers, NGOs, educational providers and media and industry players. When it comes to actual initiatives, these generally fall into one of the following categories: projects,

About MediaSmartOnline

What is the campaign about?

The main objective of this campaign is to test out an approach developed for the European Commission by the Media and Learning Association (MLA) and EUN for running a Europe-wide media literacy awareness-raising campaign in collaboration with the Insafe network of Safer Internet Centres (SICs).

Youth working with industry

Youth engagement with industry partnerships, especially in the digital realm, is becoming crucial in addressing societal challenges. A recent example is the Google summit on 'Fighting Misinformation Online' held in Brussels on 21 March 2024, which brought together experts and young voices to discuss media literacy and disinformation in the context of elections.

BIK platform redevelopment: launch date and onboarding for SIC Coordinators

New portal teaser banner

The new BIK platform will launch next Monday, 7 October 2024.

Onboarding for user accounts for the redeveloped BIK platform is now commencing. In a change to the previous platform, SIC Coordinators are invited to set up their accounts first. They will then have permission to set up user accounts for their own SIC staff members to streamline processes and ensure that the right colleagues in your SIC have access to the correct services.

For those SIC Coordinators who responded to the Insafe Steering Committee mailing last week, you were sent an email outlining the first steps for creating your account earlier today.

For those SIC Coordinators still to respond to the onboarding email, please do so as soon as possible.

Onboarding for wider network members will commence next Monday, once the new site is live.

* The new platform uses EU Login, the European Commission's user authentication service. It allows authorised users to access a wide range of Commission web services using a single email address and password. Further details are provided in onboarding emails.

[REMINDER, FOR PARTICIPATION]

Again, thank you to the many of you who are actively supporting the first evaluation of the BIK+ strategy. We appreciate your commitment and support.

All SICs supporting the activity were sent the packages for consultation facilitators, including the items translated into the national language, earlier this month.All available language packages for consultation facilitators can also be downloaded via the BIK portal.

NB: If you would like to improve the language of translated items to meet the needs of the group(s) you are consulting better, please do not hesitate to do so. If you choose to do so, please be so kind as to inform us about the adaptations by writing to BIKevaluation@betterinternetforkids.eu.

To reiterate, the involvement of Safer Internet Centres in this activity entails:

  • consulting a minimum of 10 children and young people (under the age of 18 years);

  • in groups with the proposed size of 5 to 10 participants per session;

  • for a duration of approximately 60 minutes;

  • using the protocol for facilitators, as provided in the ‘facilitator packages’ (which will be sent to you in final form via email by mid-September).

Next steps:

  • September-October 2024: Facilitation of consultations with children and young people.

  • Thursday, 31 October 2024: Deadline for submitting consultation reports based on the provided template.
