Trainings on hate speech and online human rights

The Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth (IPDJ) organised a face-to-face training about 'hate speech and alternative narratives, and human rights online' to promote and protect online human rights.

Within the scope of the Portuguese Safer Internet Centre, with the support of the European Union, and continuing the actions of the 'No hate speech' movement in Portugal, Portuguese Institute of Sport and Youth (IPDJ) has been implementing several training sessions and awareness-raising actions on hate speech and alternative narratives, as well as human rights online.

In this context, IPDJ organised this training action, in a free, face-to-face format, which took place at its headquarters in Lisbon, in collaboration with Amnesty International Portugal, which certified the event.

Training about online hate speech in Portugal.

It had the participation of around 20 trainees who, from 21 to 25 October, addressed themes such as:

  • Developing skills that translate into behaviours that promote and protect online Human Rights (mobilising knowledge, values, attitudes, dispositions and abilities);
  • Promoting the educational approaches of the No Hate Speech Movement, the IPDJ and the Council of Europe;
  • Reflection on the role and implications of artificial intelligence in online hate speech;
  • Disseminating educational resources produced within the scope of the 'no sate speech movement', with special attention to the 'references and alternatives' manuals and the 'Human rights guide for internet users', by the Council of Europe.

The 20 trainees are now qualified to prepare and run awareness-raising sessions in this area, particularly in the areas of youth information and counselling and youth work.

The Portuguese SIC extends Special thanks to everyone who actively participated in the training.
